Psalm 106

1  Alleluia.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is gracious, ♦︎
for his faithfulness endures for ever.
2  Who can express the mighty acts of the Lord ♦︎
or show forth all his praise?
3  Blessed are those who observe what is right ♦︎
and always do what is just.
4  Remember me, O Lord, in the favour you bear for your people; ♦︎
   visit me in the day of your salvation;
5  That I may see the prosperity of your chosen
and rejoice in the gladness of your people, ♦︎
   and exult with your inheritance.
6  We have sinned like our forebears; ♦︎
we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.
7  In Egypt they did not consider your wonders,
nor remember the abundance of your faithful love; ♦︎
they rebelled against the Most High at the Red Sea.
8  But he saved them for his name’s sake, ♦︎
that he might make his power to be known.
9  He rebuked the Red Sea and it was dried up; ♦︎
so he led them through the deep as through the wilderness.
10  He saved them from the adversary’s hand ♦︎
and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11  As for those that troubled them, the waters overwhelmed them; ♦︎
there was not one of them left.
12  Then they believed his words ♦︎
   and sang aloud his praise.
13  But soon they forgot his deeds ♦︎
and would not wait for his counsel.
14  A craving seized them in the wilderness, ♦︎
and they put God to the test in the desert.
15  He gave them their desire, ♦︎
but sent a wasting sickness among them.
16  They grew jealous of Moses in the camp ♦︎
and of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord.
17  So the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan ♦︎
and covered the company of Abiram.
18  A fire was kindled in their company; ♦︎
the flame burnt up the wicked.
19  They made a calf at Horeb ♦︎
   and worshipped the molten image;
20  Thus they exchanged their glory ♦︎
for the image of an ox that feeds on hay.
21  They forgot God their saviour, ♦︎
who had done such great things in Egypt,
22  Wonderful deeds in the land of Ham ♦︎
and fearful things at the Red Sea.
23  So he would have destroyed them,
had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, ♦︎
to turn away his wrath from consuming them.

Deuteronomy 8: 1-10

A Warning Not to Forget God in Prosperity

8This entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. 2Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. 3He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.* 4The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet did not swell these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you. 6Therefore keep the commandments of the Lord your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you.

Luke 9: 18-27

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

18 Once when Jesus* was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ 19They answered, ‘John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.’ 20He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered, ‘The Messiah* of God.’

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, 22saying, ‘The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.’

23 Then he said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. 25What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? 26Those who are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.’
